Preparing for Your First Chiropractic Care Session

Preparing for Your First Chiropractic Care Session

Before You Arrive: What to Do in Advance

Taking a few simple steps before your first appointment ensures you get the most value from your visit and helps us serve you better.

Start by gathering your health information. Make a list of any current health conditions, medications you’re taking, and previous surgeries or injuries. Note any allergies and what treatments you’ve tried for your current complaint. If you have recent X-rays or MRI images from other providers, bring those—they help us understand your history without duplicating imaging.

Write down your main concerns and what you hope to achieve through chiropractic care. Are you seeking pain relief? Improved mobility? Prevention of future problems? This helps Dr. Beth understand your priorities and expectations.

What to Bring to Your Appointment

Bring a photo ID and your insurance card if you have chiropractic coverage. We’ll verify your benefits and discuss any out-of-pocket costs before treatment begins. If you don’t have insurance, we’ll discuss payment options and flexible arrangements.

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to your spine. We’ll examine your back, neck, and potentially other areas, so clothes that move easily are ideal. Women might want to avoid wearing bras with tight straps, and men should wear loose shirts. Avoid very bulky clothing that gets in the way.

Timing and Logistics

Arrive 10-15 minutes early to allow time for paperwork. We’ll have you complete health history forms that help Dr. Beth understand your background. If you’ve already done this online, just plan for check-in time.

Allow 60-90 minutes for your first appointment. This includes consultation, examination, possible NASA nerve scan, and your first adjustment if appropriate. Subsequent visits are typically 20-30 minutes.

Avoid eating a large meal immediately before your appointment, though light snacks are fine. You don’t want to be hungry during your visit, but a full stomach can make lying on the treatment table uncomfortable.

Physical Preparation

Get good sleep the night before. Your body performs better and healing processes work more effectively when you’re well-rested. Avoid strenuous exercise the day of your appointment, particularly if you’re already experiencing pain—we don’t want to aggravate your condition before being assessed.

Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water, as this supports your body’s healing processes. Avoid caffeine and alcohol before your appointment, as these can affect how your body responds to treatment.

Mental and Emotional Preparation

If you’re anxious about chiropractic care, that’s completely normal. Many of our patients come in nervous, especially if they’ve had concerns about forceful adjustments. Let us know about your anxiety when you call to schedule. Dr. Beth specializes in gentle care and takes extra time with anxious patients to explain everything and move at your comfort level.

Come with an open mind. Chiropractic care might be different from what you expected. Give it a fair chance and trust Dr. Beth’s expertise. Most anxious patients are pleasantly surprised at how comfortable and beneficial the experience actually is.

Questions to Ask During Your Visit

Don’t hesitate to ask questions during your appointment. What’s your specific diagnosis? Which techniques will Dr. Beth use? How many visits will you likely need? What results can you expect and in what timeframe? How can you protect your spine at home? These questions help you understand your care fully and feel confident in your treatment plan.

After Your First Appointment

You might feel slightly sore after your first adjustment as your body adapts to the changes. This typically resolves within 24 hours. Apply ice if you experience any soreness. Drink extra water to support your healing processes.

Notice how you feel over the next few days. Many patients feel immediate relief, while others notice gradual improvement. Report your experience during your next visit so Dr. Beth can track your progress and adjust treatment if needed.
