Activator Method Chiropractic · Collingwood
Many headaches — including tension headaches and cervicogenic migraines — originate from the neck. Activator Method chiropractic care treats the source, not just the symptom.
Book a ConsultationThe Neck-Headache Connection
A significant proportion of headaches — including many diagnosed as “migraines” — have a cervicogenic (neck-based) component. Restricted joints in the upper cervical spine (C1–C3) refer pain directly into the head through the trigeminal-cervical complex, producing headaches that feel like they originate inside the skull when they actually begin in the neck.
The Activator Method chiropractic instrument provides the most precise, controlled cervical adjustments available — targeting the specific levels causing referred head pain without any of the forceful manipulation that can sometimes aggravate headache-prone patients. Its gentle, reproducible impulse is ideal for the sensitive upper cervical region.
For patients with vascular or inflammatory components to their headaches, we may also incorporate BioFlex Laser Therapy targeting the cervical and suboccipital region to reduce neurogenic inflammation. And addressing underlying neck pain is often the single most impactful step toward reducing headache frequency.
Signs Your Headache May Be Cervicogenic
Pain that starts at the base of the skull · Headaches that worsen with neck movement · One-sided head pain · Associated neck stiffness or tenderness · Pain triggered by sustained postures (driving, screen use) · Headache relieved by pressing on the upper neck · Limited relief from standard headache medications
Headache Types We Address
Cervicogenic Headaches
Directly caused by cervical spine dysfunction — among the most responsive headache types to chiropractic care, with strong evidence for long-term reduction.
Tension-Type Headaches
The most common headache type — often linked to myofascial trigger points in the neck, upper trapezius, and suboccipital muscles. Chiropractic and soft tissue work bring excellent results.
Migraine with Cervical Trigger
Many migraine sufferers have an identifiable cervical trigger. Reducing neck dysfunction can significantly decrease migraine frequency, duration, and intensity.
Post-Concussion Headaches
Whiplash-type forces during concussion often injure the upper cervical spine. Gentle Activator care can be an important part of supporting recovery from concussion-related neurological effects.
Occipital Neuralgia
Irritation of the occipital nerves causing sharp, electric-shock pain at the base of the skull and up through the scalp — often relieved by decompressing the upper cervical spine.

Most patients with cervicogenic or tension headaches experience significant reduction in frequency within 4–8 visits. We work collaboratively with your GP or neurologist for mixed-type headache cases.
