Book a ConsultationUnderstanding Sciatica
Sciatica is not a diagnosis in itself — it’s a symptom. The sciatic nerve, the longest in the body, runs from your lower spine through the buttock and down each leg. When something compresses or irritates this nerve, the result is the hallmark burning, shooting, or electric-shock pain that travels from the low back or buttock into the leg, sometimes reaching the foot.
Common causes include lumbar disc herniation, spinal stenosis, piriformis syndrome, and degenerative spinal arthritis. Because the underlying cause varies, effective sciatica treatment requires identifying the specific source — which is exactly what we do at Dr. Beth’s.
The instrument-assisted chiropractic instruments allows us to gently restore motion to restricted lumbar and sacroiliac joints without the rotational forces that can aggravate an already irritated sciatic nerve. When inflammation is a significant driver, we add BioFlex Laser Therapy to calm nerve tissue and accelerate healing at the cellular level.
You May Have Sciatica If You Experience
Sharp or burning pain from the low back into the buttock and leg · Shooting pain that worsens with sitting · Numbness or tingling down one leg · Weakness in the leg or foot · Pain that improves when walking but returns when you stop · One-sided symptoms (though bilateral sciatica is possible)
Common Root Causes
Lumbar Disc Herniation
The single most common cause of true sciatica — a herniated disc at L4–L5 or L5–S1 pressing directly on the sciatic nerve roots.
Piriformis Syndrome
Tightness in the piriformis muscle (deep in the buttock) can compress the sciatic nerve and mimic lumbar sciatica — often missed by other providers.
Spinal Stenosis
Narrowing of the spinal canal — often age-related — that reduces space for nerve roots. Gentle mobilization helps maintain whatever space is available.
Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction
Misalignment or restriction of the SI joint can create buttock and leg pain that replicates sciatic patterns — very responsive to instrument-assisted adjustments.
Facet Joint Irritation
Inflamed or locked facet joints can refer pain into the leg in a pattern similar to sciatica, especially in older patients with degenerative changes.
Your Care at Dr. Beth’s
Before any treatment, we perform a comprehensive neurological and orthopedic assessment to pinpoint exactly which structure is irritating the sciatic nerve. This precision allows us to target care appropriately rather than guessing.
Your personalized sciatica care plan may include:
Many patients experience meaningful pain reduction within 2–4 weeks. Chronic or severe sciatica may require a longer course of care.
